Rutgers University-Newark Application Requirements for Transfer Student Applicants

• Online application at admissions.rutgers.edu/apply
• Non-refundable $70 application fee or
  • Submit a College Board fee waiver form signed by your guidance counselor
• Submit official transcript from all previously attended colleges - applicable options listed here:
  • High School Transcripts for High school graduates MUST submit official high school transcript certifying diploma earned
    • Official final HS transcript needed if less than 24 college credits completed when applying
  • GED Holders MUST submit official results and a transcript of any high school work attempted
  • College Transcripts from each college you have attended including all courses attempted
    • Must included all grades earned through the priority filing date
• Successful completion of two college level of English Composition
• Successful completion of one college level of Math

RU-N Test Blind: Rutgers–Newark no longer requires the submission of SAT and ACT standardized test scores for students applying for spring 2022 and beyond. Please view the exceptions to this policy at admissions.rutgers.edu/test-optional-faqs.

• Transfer students that choose to submit their test scores regardless of our RU-N test blind policy, your official SAT/ACT scores with your application would be accepted if
  • Graduated high school fewer than two years before starting classes at Rutgers-Newark

  • Currently in your first semester of college

Transfer students that choose to submit their test scores regardless of our RU-N test blind policy, please be aware that

• Unofficial test scores CANNOT be accepted

•  Scores MUST be sent directly from the testing agency to Rutgers

• When requesting your official scores, use our SAT code of 2765 or our ACT code of 2592

• The ACT score MUST include the writing component

Personal Essay

• The personal essay is optional for all transfer students
• Personal essays MUST be included in the space provided on the online application. They cannot be sent separately

Transfer Credit

• Most credit evaluations are completed within 30 days of admission.
• In general, credit is granted for courses taken at accredited colleges and universities, if they are the equivalent of courses offered by Rutgers University and a grade of at least a "C" has been earned.
• Individual courses are evaluated by the faculty (in the case of direct course equivalency) and the school/college (for the case where a direct departmental equivalent does not exist) before credit is granted.
• You may find it helpful to review Rutgers' course content information in our catalogs and on the NJ Transfer web site (for New Jersey community college students).

English Langauge Requirement

• All applicants MUST meet a minimum level of English Language Proficiency. An official English proficiency examination score is ONLYrequired for applicants whose secondary schooling has been outside the U.S. in a country where English is NOT the principal language, regardless of U.S. residency status.
• Students who have achieved a grade of "B" or better in a college-level English Composition course at an accredited U.S. college (not a foreign affiliate) are exempt from the English proficiency examination requirement. English courses that are designated ESL, non-native, or which require a special support component, as well as courses taken outside the U.S., are not acceptable. Please also note that Rutgers University does not accept correspondence or online courses.
• Rutgers accepts ANY of the following standardized tests to determine the English proficiency of its international applicants:
• Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
  • An official TOEFL score is acceptable for applicants whose secondary schooling has been outside the U.S. in a country where English is not the principal language, regardless of U.S. residency status.
  • Your official TOEFL score report MUST be from a test taken within the past two years.
  •  Your test score MUST be submitted directly to us from the testing service.
  • Acceptable scores for College of Nursing applicants are 600+ on the paper and pencil test, 250+ on the computer-based test, or 100+ on the Internet-based test.
  • Acceptable scores for applicants to ALL other schools are 550+ on the paper and pencil test, 213+ on the computer-based test, or 79+ on the Internet-based test.
  • The Rutgers TOEFL code is 2765.

• International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

  

  • An official IELTS academic score is acceptable for applicants whose secondary schooling has been outside the U.S. in a country where English is not the principal language, regardless of U.S. residency status.
  • Your official IELTS score report MUST be from a test taken within the past two years.
  • Your test score MUST be submitted directly to us from the testing service.
  • A score of 6.5 or higher on either the academic paper and pencil test or the academic computer-based test is acceptable for our New Brunswick and Newark campuses. A score of 6 or higher is acceptable for our Camden campus.
  • Request your IELTS score
• Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB)
  •  An official MELAB score is acceptable for applicants whose secondary schooling has been outside the U.S. in a country where English is not the principal language, regardless of U.S. residency status.
  • Your official MELAB score report MUST be from a test taken within the past two years.
  • Your test score MUST be submitted directly to us from the testing service.
  • The minimum acceptable score is 82 for our New Brunswick and Camden campuses and 76 for our Newark campus.

International Transfer Students

• You are considered an International Transfer applicant at Rutgers, if you meet the transfer criteria listed above AND ONE of the following conditions:
  • You are currently studying in the United States on a student visa (F-1 or J-1) in high school, college, or an English language program
  • You intend to enter the United States on a student visa (F-1 or J-1)
